Album Review

Rob Caldwell [allmusic.com]

Song of the Stallion is composed around a merging of Hindi, Middle Eastern, Western classical, and American styles of music. The album includes a fair amount of recited mystical/romantic poetry concerning, among other things, marrying an Indian maiden, in addition to Basho's deep operatic wailing (his voice is not what he's known for). If that sounds a bit out there to you, then be assured that the music itself is often spellbinding. Basho is a master of fleet-fingered, intricate acoustic guitar and most of the album is instrumental. The tabla/guitar duet of ''Roses and Snow'' is one of his best recorded moments.
