Album Review

Richard S. Ginell [allmusic.com]

With Cleveland Eaton II (bass) and Maurice White (drums) replacing Eldee Young and Red Holt in the trio, Ramsey Lewis alters course just a bit from his handclapping soul-jazz idiom that was so popular at the time. The two new sidemen are relegated more to the background, and some punchy big band charts by Chicago's Richard Evans share the spotlight with Lewis' gospel-blues-drenched piano. Nevertheless, the old swinging fervor is left intact this time, as Lewis and company purvey a set of ten pop hits, with a few others worked in. They even got a large-scale hit (number 19 on the pop charts) out of the old gospel tune ''Wade in the Water'' (the photo of the tall, pretty model doing so on the cover might have struck some as being sacrilegious). The best cut of the bunch is the hard-swinging, down-home treatment of the Stevie Wonder hit ''Up Tight,'' that got almost as much airplay as the title track. Like The In Crowd, this record evokes its era indelibly.

Liner Notes

If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then RAMSEY LEWIS has been flattered more often than any other instrumentalist in the music business. But the multitudes of imitators have simply paid their respect to a great and unique artist ... RAMSEY LEWIS. This album is a slight departure for Ramsey. The same exuberant and distinct sound that is uniquely Ramsey Lewis is still here, of course. And Ramsey's choice of material is typically contemporary, but this time out Ramsey is performing with a driving, cracking big band and the combination of Ramsey's piano and Richard Evans' arrangements is too much. Ramsey Lewis, almost single handedly, brought a new awareness to the music business by showing how different forms of music could be combined successfully. Jazz, rock and blues are all intermingled here in the best Ramsey Lewis tradition. First it was ''THE 'IN' CROWD,'' then ''HANG ON SLOOPY,'' and ''HARD DAY'S NIGHT.'' Now, dig the latest from Ramsey to you, ''WADE IN THE WATER.''
