Modern jazz guitar legend Larry Coryell teams up with the rather obscure Brian Keane for this album of acoustic duets. The two play both six- and 12-string instruments, often overdubbing parts to create a big, chorus-like sound. Keane is an intelligent, chopsy soloist with a tone that's warmer than Coryell's. His compositions range from accessible blowing vehicles such as ''Brazilia,'' ''At the Airport,'' and ''Warm Weather'' to the hard-edged ''Logical Solution'' and the highly abstract ''A Piece for Larry.'' His moving ballad ''Patty's Song'' employs a reverb patch that makes his guitar sound like a pained, distant cry. Coryell weighs in with the vaguely Old World ''Waltz No. 6,'' the plaintive 12-string etude ''La Pluie,'' the avant folk title track, and the concluding up-tempo tour de force ''Lines,'' with its fleeting traces of bluegrass. The two players co-composed ''Armando's Cadenza Concerto,'' one of the album's most enigmatic moments. Anyone who enjoyed Coryell's '70s duo outings with Philip Catherine will find much to appreciate here.
