Album Review

Samir Arora [allmusic.com]

Duran Duran Big Thing is not only my favourite Duran Duran album but also one of my all time favourite albums. Oddly, the two hit songs all she wants is and i dont want your love while being absolutely great tracks are not necessarily the strongest on the album.. Other than these ''radio hits'' the album is quite experimental and duran duran have really done a great job at it. A lot of people probably did not get the album or had expecations for duran duran to come up with another rio or seven and the ragged tiger and the allmusic reviewer has been rather strong worded about his/her negativity and i think the review is unnecessarily harsh (other than the fact that the album was not a big commercial hit, no idea why, perhaps it was bad marketing). Being the 80s generation, i have followed duran duran from the beginning and have repeatedly heard the debut album as well as rio and seven and the ragged tiger so am well versed with what duran duran is all about. Many people like a group and then probably expect them to come out with the same style material again and again. Duran Duran by putting out big thing proved that they are more than just a one or two album wonder or a single sound kind of band but rather they deserved a super group status. Big thing has an sophisticated sound with haunting counter melodies and it takes a few listens to fully appreciate the album.

Each track in the album is strong and has aged very well, after all i am writing this review almost 30 years after i bought the album and i have put it to spin in my CD player countless times since then. Its a great album and one needs to hear it on its own merit and without expectations or comparisons and let the album reveal itself.Too late marlene is my favourite track but i normally like to play the album through from start to finish..If one likes electronic music and/or duran duran and /or sophisticated music that sounds great playing in the car or even late night or in the back ground during a party etc etc. i dont see why and how one would not like this album.

I think the album is a masterpiece!
