Clyde McPhatter ripped some pages from Joe Turner and other early R&B luminaries, made the sound more accessible, and landed on the pop charts with an uncanny frequency. Considering when this live set took place, it's hard to quibble about the quality. An ample band backs McPhatter on 14 songs but never overshadows the fluid tenor who inspired many imitators, most notably Dee Clark. A feast and a must for McPhatter fans, and a good CD for lovers of classy traditional R&B the way it used to be done. [Review for the CD reissue]
