Album Review

Bruce Eder [allmusic.com]

Chet Atkins meets Bob Dylan on this album, covering the latter's ''Blowin' in the Wind'' in a free-flowing manner, closer in tempo to Peter, Paul & Mary's approach than to Dylan's own; but there's a lot else to enjoy here -- a beautiful and richly textured guitar instrumental version of ''Wimoweh,'' and a re-definition of a familiar saxophone workout under the self-explanatory title ''Yakety Axe,'' plus a surprisingly subtle adaptation of ''Cattle Call,'' and the bluesy ''Levee Walking.'' Only the closing vocal number doesn't quite fit in with the rest, but most of Finger Pickin' Good is so charming that it can be forgiven.
