Album Review

Steven McDonald [allmusic.com]

It's possible to find through-lines of the new romantic strain of pop throughout this Bill Nelson release, with washes of synthesizer and dance-of-electrocution rhythms going on all over the place, but the true fascination is the mix of a post-ironic tone and a cultured sensitivity to art and beauty. While Nelson puts his guitar chops on display periodically through the album (much of it with E-bow in hand), this is far from being a guitar album -- all of the disparate elements are too well-integrated for any to assume a point of focus. There is a sweetness and a lightness to a great deal of the work Nelson put into this album, and this makes it infinitely listenable. In some respects, this is also a record that will teach listeners everything they need to know about Bill Nelson -- it touches on all aspects of what he does.

Right here is essential Nelson. From beginning to end this album is absolutely amazing. A sparkling and whirling sonic journey, this is another album that is unique in the entire Nelson canon. His lyrics are far more introspective here than in the past. His focus is mostly on the passage of time, mortality and relationships - particularly love notes to his then wife Jan. In fact, aside from a drummer, Jan is the only other person to appear on this recording (percussion). Nelson played all other instruments.

Moving away from the crunchier, occasionally angular post-punk of his previous 2 albums, we are firmly entrenched in new romantic art rock - Nelson style. The arrangements - often polyphonic (Hope For The Heartbeat) are breathtaking and at times chill inducing (A Private View). Simply a stunning effort from one of the most underrated artists of our time. Easily the equal of Roxy's Avalon or Orchestral Manoeuvres' Architecture and Morality. Truly inspired and visionary, this is the last great album from a gifted artist.

''...I take another brief dip
In the indifference of fools...
I see a whole new me
I see a whole new you...
Is this the nature of the beast?
Am I the creature you pursue?
Is this for general release
Or just a private view...?

From here, Bill would release 2 more EP's of ''song oriented'' material of varying quality, before following his muse into more experimental and ambient territories for many years.

5 stars and a great place to start your Nelson adventure.
