Album Review

William Ruhlmann [allmusic.com]

Andy Fairweather Low adds a tropical lilt to his repertoire with the leadoff track, ''Shimmie-Doo-Wah-Sae,'' and a song title that, along with the title tune, ''Da Doo Rendezvous,'' and ''Rhythm 'N' Jazz,'' demonstrates his affection for onomatopoeia and different musical genres. ''Da Doo Rendezvous,'' with its strings and wistful tone, is the obvious follow-up to ''Wide Eyed and Legless,'' but the problem is that it didn't follow up. Nor did this album fulfill the commercial promise of La Booga Rooga, which turned Fairweather Low, in record company eyes, from a breaking artist into dead meat. (Still, you had to admire a sense of humor that allowed him to produce ''Hot Poop,'' a song whose lyrics consisted entirely of its chord changes.)
