Album Review

Robert Walton [allmusic.com]

I would love nothing more than for history to rehabilitate this song list. I came to this album after Year of the Cat and while Stewart's subsequent albums left me feeling rather sterile, his early catalogue shook me at my teenage core. Not knowing I wasn't supposed to like any of this music I grooved on every cut and melody. So many great songs of raw confessional emotion, they reminded me of the poetry of William Carlos Williams who won the US National Book award for turning notes on the refrigerator into poetry. Stewart's songs on this collection reach prog proportions with songs like ''Love Chronicles'', ''Night of the 4th of May'' or ''The Ballad of Mary Foster''. All he needed was a mellotron and flute. All I can say is, after 45 years, I'm still listening to Al.
