Makoto Ozone is a pianist who often emphasizes introspective moods, yet has an impressive amount of technique. On this effort for Columbia, he is heard in a variety of settings ranging from a duet with flutist Steve Kujala to a quintet with Kujala, guitarist John Abercrombie, bassist Marc Johnson and drummer Peter Erskine. Ozone's seven originals are sometimes a bit dry, but the post-bop improvising by the group (and the close communication between Ozone, Johnson and Erskine) is worth hearing.
