Album Review

Short Stories is the debut album by Jon and Vangelis, the collaborative effort between Jon Anderson of the progressive rock band Yes and electronic music pioneer Vangelis. This was not the first time that the two had worked together: Vangelis had auditioned to be Rick Wakeman's replacement in Yes in 1974, but the role was given to Patrick Moraz. In 1975, Jon Anderson sang on ''So Long Ago So Clear'' from Heaven and Hell. [wikipedia.org]

Album Review

The Friends of Mr Cairo is the second album by Jon and Vangelis, released in 1981. There are two editions of this album, with different sleeves. Both versions were released in 1981 within a few weeks of each other. The title track, ''The Friends of Mr Cairo'', peaked at No. 1 on the Canadian singles chart in late 1981, though this track was not a hit elsewhere. The second edition of the album includes the single ''I'll Find My Way Home'', which stayed for 14 weeks in the Swiss charts and peaked at No. 1 on 7 March 1982. It also peaked at No. 6 in the UK. ''State of Independence'' was later a hit single for Donna Summer, and a decade later for Moodswings with Chrissie Hynde on vocal. Anderson also later re-recorded that song on his solo album Change We Must, released in 1994.

The title track and its accompanying music video serve as an ode to classic Hollywood films of the 1930s and 1940s. Most notable references are to the classic film noir The Maltese Falcon. The track incorporates sound effects and voice impressions of the stars of the era, most notably Humphrey Bogart, Sydney Greenstreet, Peter Lorre, and Jimmy Stewart. At the beginning of the track, the screeching of tires and a car horn are heard, presumably as a car makes an attempted getaway, which then gives way to the sound of gunfire. This screeching sound/car horn is identical to that heard in the 1971 feature film Get Carter (at 1.1.52-1.1.56), and was probably sampled for use on the track.

Joel Cairo (Mr Cairo) is the name of the character played by Peter Lorre in The Maltese Falcon. [wikipedia.org]

Jon And Vangelis's Biography

Paul Simpson [allmusic.com]

Jon Anderson, lead singer of progressive rock titans Yes, and Greek synthesizer genius Vangelis released four collaborative albums of arty electronic pop as Jon & Vangelis between 1980 and 1991, scoring a handful of international hit singles. The two had worked together before -- Vangelis was in the running to become Rick Wakeman's replacement when he first left Yes in 1974, and Anderson sang on Vangelis' classic 1975 album Heaven & Hell. Anderson also appeared on Vangelis' Opera Sauvage (1979), and by the time he left Yes in 1980, the two had already released Short Stories. The release was a success, and was quickly followed by 1981's The Friends of Mr. Cairo, which yielded the major hit ''I'll Find My Way Home'' as well as ''State of Independence,'' which would become a hit for Donna Summer in 1982. The less pop-oriented Private Collection appeared in 1983. Anderson rejoined Yes in 1983, and he attempted to work with Vangelis again in 1986, but none of this material saw the light of day until later. Page of Life appeared in 1991, but wasn't released in America until Anderson changed the track list and issued it in 1998, to Vangelis' disapproval, thus ending their collaboration.
