Ros' first Phase 4 LP, Bongos from the South is light-years removed from his earliest records. The Command label's trick of using total channel separation for bongos and so forth already is in full bloom. ''Deep in the Heart of Texas'' is arranged as a conga, interestingly, and such venerable warhorses as ''Taboo,'' ''Brasil,'' and ''El Cumbanchero'' are strong enough to survive the indignities of stereo exaggeration. On the bright side, the fidelity is superior and the performances very spirited.
